Wildflower Meadow Guide
How to plan, sow and manage a UK wildflower meadow, from a small patch of lawn to a whole field.
Preparation: wildflowers thrive on poor soil, so strip turf or reduce fertility before sowing. Sow native seed in autumn or spring onto bare, raked ground.
Yellow rattle is key: it weakens vigorous grasses so flowers can establish. Cut and remove the hay in late summer, and use local-provenance seed where you can.
Patience pays off — most meadows take two or three years to settle into a rich mix of flowers that feed pollinators and wildlife.
