Chinese Jujube

The Chinese Jujube, or Red Date, is a small, deciduous tree reaching 3-5m in height and spread. It's known for its small, date-like fruits that ripen from green to reddish-brown, offering a crisp, apple-like texture when young and a date-like chewiness when fully mature. While marginally hardy in the UK (H3-H4), it benefits greatly from a sheltered, sunny spot, such as against a south-facing wall, and well-drained soil. Small, yellowish-green flowers appear in June-July. It's a fascinating, lesser-known fruit tree that adds an exotic touch and unique flavour to the garden.
