Lush Mountain Bamboo
Yushania ferax is a rare and elegant clumping bamboo that brings a touch of the wild mountains of China to the UK garden. It is characterized by its exceptionally long, slender branches and very narrow, delicate leaves that create a soft, airy texture. The culms are thin and dark green, often developing a purple or reddish tint upon exposure to sunlight. Its habit is gracefully arching, almost weeping, making it a beautiful specimen for a woodland garden or near a pond. While it is a clumping bamboo, it has a 'long-necked' rhizome system, meaning it forms a very loose, wide clump rather than a tight one, so it needs a bit of space to spread. It is hardy (H4-H5) but prefers a cool, damp, and sheltered position away from drying winds. It thrives in moisture-retentive, acidic to neutral soil and is perfect for adding a naturalistic, soft feel to a planting scheme.
