Indian Hill Bamboo

This is a vigorous and incredibly graceful bamboo that creates a shimmering, fountain-like effect. It produces tall, slender, very flexible canes that arch over under the weight of their own dense, narrow foliage. In the UK, it can reach heights of 4-5 metres. It is a running bamboo with long rhizomes, meaning it will spread significantly and is best suited to larger gardens or for use as a wild-style screen. It is very hardy (H5) and particularly useful for coastal gardens as it has a good tolerance for wind compared to other species. The overall appearance is very soft and airy, moving beautifully in the breeze. It does best in a moisture-retentive soil and, while it can tolerate some sun, it often looks its best in semi-shaded positions where the soil doesn't dry out. A great choice for a 'jungle' look or for covering large banks.

Sun: Full sun to partial shade.

Soil: Moist, fertile soil.

Hardiness: H5 — down to −15°C.
