Wollemi Pine
The Wollemi Pine is a truly remarkable and ancient evergreen conifer, one of the world's oldest and rarest trees, discovered in Australia in 1994. It forms a columnar to conical tree with striking, dark green, flattened, fern-like foliage that darkens to a brownish hue in winter. It has a unique 'bubbly' bark. In UK gardens, it is slow-growing, eventually reaching an ultimate height of 5-10m and a spread of 3-5m, though it can grow much larger in its native habitat. It prefers a sheltered position in full sun to partial shade and consistently moist, well-drained soil. It is surprisingly hardy (H4-H5) but benefits from winter protection in colder regions. A fascinating specimen tree and a living fossil.
