Chaste Tree 'Latifolia'
A striking late-flowering shrub that brings a Mediterranean feel to a sunny UK border. Vitex agnus-castus 'Latifolia' is more robust than the species, featuring aromatic, palmate leaves that resemble hemp. In late summer and early autumn, it produces upright terminal spikes of fragrant, violet-blue flowers that are highly attractive to bees and butterflies. To succeed in the UK, it requires a sheltered, south-facing position and well-drained soil; it may die back to the ground in harsh winters but usually regrows vigorously from the base. It thrives in full sun, where the heat encourages better wood ripening and more profuse flowering. Pruning back hard in early spring helps maintain a compact, bushy habit. Hardiness is generally rated at H4, making it suitable for most of the UK provided it is protected from cold, drying winds. Its unique texture and late-season colour make it an excellent specimen for a gravel garden.
