Golden Primrose

Vitaliana primuliflora (formerly Douglasia vitaliana) is a high-altitude gem from the European Alps and Pyrenees. This tiny, mat-forming perennial creates a low, moss-like carpet of grey-green, pointed leaves. In spring, it is almost completely buried under a mass of bright, golden-yellow, tubular, five-petalled flowers. It is a slow-growing and choice alpine that requires perfect drainage and a position in full sun to thrive. In the UK, it is most successfully grown in a scree bed, an alpine trough, or in a tufa rock. It is extremely hardy (H7) but is very sensitive to winter moisture and stagnant air; top-dressing with fine grit is essential to keep the foliage clear of the soil. Despite its small size, it is a plant of great character and is highly prized by alpine collectors for its intense colour and compact, neat habit. It represents the quintessential high-alpine aesthetic and is a wonderful addition to any specialist collection.
