Broad Bean 'The Sutton'

A classic dwarf variety of broad bean, reaching only about 30-45cm in height, making it ideal for smaller gardens or exposed, windy sites in the UK where taller varieties might lodge. 'The Sutton' produces clusters of pods containing small, sweet, tender beans. It is remarkably hardy, often sown in late autumn (November) for an early spring harvest or in early spring (March-April). As a legume, it fixes nitrogen in the soil, benefiting subsequent crops. The plant features attractive white flowers with black blotches that are attractive to bees. It thrives in deeply dug, fertile soil that retains moisture. Protection from black bean aphid is occasionally necessary in early summer. Its compact habit means it doesn't require the extensive staking typically associated with larger broad beans. Harvest when the beans are just visible through the pod for the best flavour and texture.
