Broad Bean 'Masterpiece Green Longpod'
'Masterpiece Green Longpod' is one of the best varieties of broad bean for the UK home gardener, known for its heavy yields and excellent flavour. It produces long, slender pods that can contain up to 7 or 8 large, bright green beans each. Unlike some varieties where the beans turn white or grey when cooked, 'Masterpiece Green' retains its vibrant colour, making it much more visually appealing on the plate. It can be sown in early spring or, in more sheltered southern UK gardens, in late autumn for an early summer crop. The plants are robust and upright, reaching about 90-120cm, and usually require some support with stakes and string to prevent them from flopping over when laden with pods. A common tip for UK growers is to pinch out the growing tips once the first pods have set, which helps to deter blackfly. They prefer a cool, moist climate and deep, fertile soil. The beans are delicious when picked young and tender, though they also freeze exceptionally well.
