Fragrant Snowball Bush
Viburnum × carlcephalum is a spectacular deciduous shrub that makes a wonderful flowering hedge for a UK garden, specifically if a less formal, more natural look is desired. It is most famous for its stunningly fragrant, large, round flower heads that appear in late spring. These 'snowballs', up to 13cm across, open from pink buds into pure white blossoms that fill the surrounding area with a heavy, sweet perfume. The leaves are large, dull green, and broadly heart-shaped, turning beautiful shades of red and purple in autumn before they drop. It has an open, upright habit and can grow to about 3 metres, though it can be kept smaller with pruning. It is fully hardy (H6) and prefers a sunny or partially shaded spot with moist, well-drained soil. This shrub is a great choice for a boundary where its scent can be enjoyed by passers-by or near a window where its fragrance can drift into the house.
Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
