Burkwood Viburnum

An excellent semi-evergreen shrub that creates a beautifully scented hedge. It is a cross between V. utile and V. carlesii, inheriting a vigorous growth habit and an intoxicating fragrance. In mid to late spring, it produces large, rounded clusters of pink buds that open into highly scented, waxy white flowers. These flowers transition into red berries that eventually turn black by autumn. The foliage is a dark, glossy green which may turn reddish in cold autumns; it is usually evergreen in milder parts of the UK but may be deciduous in colder northern regions or severe winters. It is hardy to H6 and performs best in a sunny or partially shaded spot with well-drained soil. It makes an ideal hedge for placing near a patio or path where the spring scent can be fully appreciated. It should be pruned after flowering to maintain a tidy hedge form.

Sun: Full sun to partial shade.

Soil: Well-drained, fertile loam.

Hardiness: H6 — down to −20°C.

Flowering: Mar, Apr, May.
