Guelder Rose 'Notcutts Variety'
This improved cultivar of the native British Guelder Rose is a versatile deciduous shrub that provides multi-seasonal interest. In late spring and early summer, it produces large, flat-topped lacecap clusters of white flowers that are highly attractive to pollinators. These are followed in autumn by heavy crops of translucent, pendulous bright red berries that often persist well into winter, providing vital food for birds. The maple-like foliage turns spectacular shades of purple and red in the autumn before falling. 'Notcutt's Variety' is exceptionally hardy (H7) and thrives in most garden soils, including heavy clay and damp spots, though it prefers a sunny or partially shaded site. It is a vigorous grower with an upright, spreading habit, making it an excellent choice for a mixed woodland border or a wildlife-friendly informal hedge. It requires minimal pruning, usually just the removal of old, crossing branches in winter.
Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
Soil: Moist, well-drained clay or loam.
