Turkish Veronica

Veronica liwanensis is an exceptionally tough and versatile alpine groundcover, native to the high mountains of Turkey. It forms an incredibly flat, evergreen carpet of small, shiny, oval green leaves that hug the ground closely. In late spring, this carpet is completely transformed by a blanket of tiny, brilliant cobalt-blue flowers with white eyes. It is extremely hardy (H7) and surprisingly drought-tolerant once established. In the UK garden, it is perfect for planting between paving stones, in rock crevices, or as a lawn substitute in small, low-traffic areas. Unlike many alpines, it can tolerate a range of soil types as long as they are not waterlogged. Its ability to suppress weeds while providing a spectacular floral display makes it a highly practical choice. It is also more tolerant of the UK's fluctuating winter temperatures than many other Turkish alpines, making it a reliable performer in most regions.
