Olympic mullein

Verbascum olympicum is a majestic biennial or short-lived perennial that makes a dramatic architectural statement in the UK garden. In its flowering year, it produces a massive, branching candelabra of bright yellow flowers that can reach up to two metres in height. The foliage is equally impressive, forming a large basal rosette of broad, silvery-grey leaves with a soft, felt-like texture. This felt coating helps the plant retain moisture, making it exceptionally drought-tolerant once established. It thrives in poor, well-drained soils and requires a position in full sun to prevent the tall flower spikes from leaning. Bees and other pollinators are strongly attracted to the nectar-rich blooms. While it may die after flowering, it often self-seeds freely, ensuring a presence in the garden for years to come. It is particularly effective at the back of a sunny border or in a gravel garden setting where its structural form can be fully appreciated.
