Wych Elm
A handsome native UK deciduous tree, typically growing 20-30m tall with a broad, spreading crown. Though much reduced by Dutch elm disease, resistant varieties are being developed. Fully hardy (H7), it prefers moist, fertile, well-drained soil and thrives in full sun to partial shade. In early spring, clusters of small, reddish-purple flowers appear before the large, rough, dark green leaves emerge. The flattened, winged fruit (samaras) follow. Historically an important timber tree and a valuable food source for caterpillars of many moths and butterflies.
Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
Soil: Moist, fertile, well-drained.
Hardiness: H7 — below −20°C.
