Western Hemlock
Western Hemlock is an elegant, graceful evergreen conifer with a distinctly drooping leader and feathery sprays of short, glossy dark green needles, each with two white bands beneath. It forms a graceful pyramidal shape, often with pendulous branches, creating a soft texture in the landscape. Hardy, it prefers cool, moist conditions and well-drained, acidic soils. It is one of the most shade-tolerant conifers, making it suitable for underplanting larger trees or in shadier parts of the garden. Its small, numerous cones are an attractive addition. Ideal for woodland gardens or as a specimen where its refined beauty can be admired. Avoid dry, exposed sites.
