False Blue Tea

Solanum crispum 'Album' is a vigorous, semi-evergreen climber that is a white-flowered form of the popular 'Glasnevin'. It produces large, open clusters of star-shaped, pure white flowers with prominent yellow centres from midsummer right through to autumn. The flowers are occasionally followed by small, yellowish-white berries. It is a fast-growing plant that can quickly cover a sunny wall, trellis, or fence, reaching up to 6 metres. In the UK, it is generally hardy (H4) but may lose its leaves in colder winters and appreciates the protection of a sheltered wall. It is not self-clinging, so it requires wires or a trellis to be tied into. It is a very easy-to-grow plant that is not fussy about soil type, as long as it is well-drained. To keep it tidy and prevent it from becoming a tangled mass, it is best to prune it back hard in early spring. It is a great choice for providing a long season of light, airy colour in the garden.
