Trillium
Trillium sessile, known as Toadshade, is a distinctive and charming Trillium for UK woodland gardens, typically reaching 20-40cm. From April to May, it produces unique, upright, sessile (stalkless) flowers in shades of deep maroon, borne directly above a whorl of three mottled leaves. It thrives in cool, moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil in partial to full shade. Fully hardy (RHS H6), it forms slowly expanding clumps and is highly valued for its intricate beauty and architectural foliage. Toadshade offers a fascinating focal point in a shaded border or a collector's corner, providing understated elegance and intriguing form.
