Giant Purple Wakerobin

Trillium kurabayashii is a spectacular and robust woodland perennial that adds an air of mystery and structural elegance to the spring garden. It is distinguished by its large, sessile (stalkless) flowers which consist of three upright, lance-shaped petals of a deep, velvety maroon-red. These sit directly atop a whorl of three broad, attractively mottled green and silver-grey leaves. Native to the western United States, it has adapted well to the UK climate, proving reliable and fully hardy (H5). It requires a sheltered, shady spot with soil that is rich in leaf mould and remains consistently moist but well-drained. Like all Trilliums, it is slow to establish and should be left undisturbed once planted. It is a true aristocrat of the woodland garden, providing a dramatic focal point in April and May. Its striking foliage remains decorative for several weeks after the flowers have faded.
