Toad Lily 'Dark Beauty'
Adding an exotic touch to the late-season UK garden, Tricyrtis formosana 'Dark Beauty' is a stunning perennial that flowers when many other woodland plants have finished. It produces upright, slightly arching stems reaching about 60cm, clothed in shiny, dark green leaves with prominent veins. In late summer and autumn, it bears terminal clusters of star-shaped white flowers that are heavily spotted and splashed with deep purple. The intricate patterns and orchid-like appearance are fascinating up close, making it an excellent plant for the edge of a path. Fully hardy (H5), it requires a position in partial shade and a moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. It is relatively easy to grow in the UK, though it should be protected from slugs while emerging in spring. Its late flowering period is invaluable for extending interest in the shade garden beyond the typical spring peak, providing a sophisticated and detailed floral display.
