Killarney Fern
Trichomanes speciosum, the Killarney Fern, is an extremely rare and protected native British fern, renowned for its delicate, translucent fronds and its unique lifecycle. This evergreen fern exists primarily as an inconspicuous underground gametophyte, but in ideal, consistently humid and shaded conditions, it produces fronds up to 30cm long. These fronds are a beautiful, gossamer-thin green, barely thicker than a single cell, giving them an almost ethereal quality. It thrives in perpetually moist, frost-free, high-humidity environments, often in caves, rock crevices, or deep, shaded ravines. Due to its rarity and specific requirements, it's primarily a plant for dedicated conservatories or specialist collectors with precise conditions.
