Foamflower 'Iron Butterfly'
Tiarella 'Iron Butterfly' is a superb shade-loving perennial prized for its deeply lobed, maple-like leaves that feature a dramatic dark purple-black central marking. This foliage provides year-round interest, often taking on bronze tones in winter. In late spring and early summer, the plant is transformed by a profusion of airy, froth-like spikes of tiny white flowers, giving it the common name Foamflower. This cultivar has a neat, mounding habit and does not spread by runners as aggressively as some other species, making it ideal for the front of a shady border or as a container plant. It performs best in cool, moist, woodland-style conditions where the soil does not dry out. In the UK, it is a reliable performer that adds intricate texture and light to darker corners of the garden. It pairs beautifully with ferns, hostas, and blackened Ophiopogon. It is generally pest-resistant and easy to maintain, requiring only the removal of faded flower spikes.
