Wild Thyme
Wild Thyme is a delightful UK native evergreen sub-shrub that forms dense, low-growing mats of tiny, dark green leaves. This 'creeping' habit makes it an ideal choice for planting in the crevices of paving, rockeries, or even as a drought-tolerant lawn substitute in low-traffic areas. When crushed or stepped upon, the foliage releases a warm, spicy fragrance. During mid-summer, the mats are almost entirely covered in a profusion of tiny, nectar-rich purple to pink flowers that are an absolute magnet for bees and butterflies. It is perfectly adapted to the British climate, being fully hardy (H5) and thriving in poor, stony, or sandy soils where other plants might struggle. It requires a position in full sun to remain compact and floriferous; in shade, it can become leggy and lose its carpet-like form. It requires virtually no maintenance other than a light shearing after flowering to keep it neat.
Sun: Full sun.
Soil: Poor to moderately fertile, well-drained soil.
Hardiness: H5 — down to −15°C.
Flowering: Jun, Jul, Aug.
