Large Thyme 'Tabor'

Thymus pulegioides 'Tabor' is a robust and vigorous cultivar of the Broad-leaved or Large Thyme, often preferred by UK gardeners for its superior culinary qualities and larger leaf size. It forms a lush, dark green mat of foliage that is much more substantial than the common creeping thymes. The leaves have a rich, classic thyme aroma with a hint of lemon, perfect for infusions, stews, and roasting. In mid-summer, it is smothered in dense spikes of rose-pink flowers that are a magnet for pollinators. Reaching approximately 20-25cm in height, it works beautifully as a low hedge for a herb bed or as a filler between paving stones. It is fully hardy (H6) and requires a sunny position with excellent drainage to prevent winter rot. Pruning back hard after flowering helps to maintain a neat habit and prevents the plant from becoming overly woody.

Sun: Full sun.

Soil: Free-draining, gritty soil.

Hardiness: H6 — down to −20°C.

Flowering: Jun, Jul, Aug.
