Wild Thyme 'Pink Chintz'

'Pink Chintz' is a superb variety of creeping thyme that creates a dense, low mat of tiny, fuzzy grey-green leaves. In early summer, the foliage is almost completely hidden by a carpet of small, clear pink flowers that are a magnet for bees and other pollinators. This plant is ideal for the UK Mediterranean garden as a 'living mulch', filling gaps between larger shrubs, or being planted in the crevices of paving and stone walls where its fragrance is released when stepped upon. It is extremely hardy and requires very little maintenance once established. The most important requirement is excellent drainage, particularly in winter; it will not tolerate sitting in damp, heavy soil. It is very drought-tolerant and thrives in full sun. After flowering, it can be lightly trimmed with shears to remove the dead flower heads and keep the mat tight and tidy. Its dainty appearance belies its tough, resilient nature. Tough, aromatic and beautiful.
