Lemon Thyme 'Aureus'
Thymus citriodorus 'Aureus' is a delightfully aromatic evergreen sub-shrub that is a staple of Mediterranean herb gardens. This cultivar is particularly prized for its small, rounded leaves that are splashed with bright golden-yellow, especially vibrant in the spring sunshine. Beyond its ornamental appeal, the foliage possesses a strong, refreshing lemon scent and is widely used in UK kitchens for seasoning fish and poultry. In mid-summer, it produces tiny, pale pink to lilac flowers that are a magnet for bees and other pollinators. It has a low, bushy habit, typically reaching only 20cm in height, making it an ideal choice for path edges, rockeries, or containers. To thrive in the UK, it needs a position in full sun and very well-drained soil; it will struggle in heavy clay that retains winter moisture. Pruning after flowering is essential to keep the plant from becoming woody and to maintain the intensity of its golden variegation.
