Western Red Cedar 'Gelderland'

A superb coniferous hedging plant that offers a more manageable and attractive alternative to Leylandii. 'Gelderland' is an evergreen with a dense, conical habit and fast-growing nature, making it ideal for creating privacy screens quickly. Its foliage consists of flattened sprays of glossy, bright green needles that take on an attractive bronze-gold tint during the cold winter months. Unlike some other conifers, the foliage releases a pleasant, fruity fragrance when crushed or brushed against. It is very hardy (H6) and copes well with the UK climate, including wind-exposed sites. One significant advantage is that it can recover from being cut back into old wood, unlike many other conifers. It thrives in most fertile, well-drained soils and prefers a position in full sun to partial shade. Regularly trimmed, it forms a neat, formal wall of green that is highly effective for noise reduction.

Sun: Full sun to partial shade.

Soil: Moist but well-drained, fertile soil.
