Himalayan Bamboo 'Nepal'

Thamnocalamus spathiflorus 'Nepal' is a graceful, high-altitude clumping bamboo that brings a sense of the Himalayas to UK gardens. This cultivar is appreciated for its elegant, arching culms that change from green to a reddish-brown with age. The foliage is fine and delicate, creating a soft, misty appearance that is perfect for Japanese-style or naturalistic gardens. It typically reaches 3 to 4 metres in height. Being a mountain species, it is well-suited to the cooler, damper parts of the UK and is hardy to H4/H5. It performs best in a sheltered, partially shaded spot where it is protected from drying winds and intense summer heat. The 'Nepal' strain is noted for being particularly resilient and having a more upright stature than some other forms. It requires consistent moisture and a soil rich in organic matter. Like most clumping bamboos, it is slow to spread and poses no threat to surrounding plants, making it a superb, well-behaved specimen for a mixed border.
