Blue-caned Bamboo 'Merlyn'
This exquisite clump-forming bamboo is a connoisseur's choice for a UK garden. 'Merlyn' is celebrated for its incredibly fine, delicate foliage and the striking bluish-purple hue of its young canes, which are covered in a white waxy bloom. The habit is gently arching, reaching around 3-4 metres in height. It is a non-invasive species, forming a tight, tidy clump over time. It thrives in the cooler, moister parts of the UK, such as the South West or Scotland, as it can be sensitive to extreme heat and drying winds. It requires a sheltered position in partial shade to maintain the best colour and leaf quality. The overall effect is incredibly soft and misty, making it a perfect backdrop for a contemplative or Japanese-style garden. While it is hardy (H4-H5), it appreciates a mulch of organic matter to keep its roots cool and moist.
Sun: Partial shade.
Soil: Moist but well-drained, acid to neutral soil.
