Garden Germander
Teucrium x lucidrys is a versatile, evergreen sub-shrub that was traditionally used in Tudor knot gardens and remains a superb choice for modern Mediterranean designs in the UK. It features small, glossy, dark green leaves with serrated edges, resembling miniature oak leaves. From mid to late summer, it produces short, upright spikes of rosy-pink, lipped flowers that are highly attractive to bees. It has a tidy, upright habit, usually reaching about 30-45cm in height. Due to its tolerance of clipping, it is often used as a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant alternative to Box (Buxus) for low hedging. It is very hardy and thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. While it is naturally bushy, regular pruning—either as a hedge or simply to remove spent flower spikes—helps to maintain its compact form. It is also well-suited to rock gardens or as an edging plant for sunny pathways where its glossy foliage can be appreciated year-round.
