Anglojap Yew 'Hillii'
Taxus × media 'Hillii' is a male cultivar of the Anglojap Yew, valued specifically in UK horticulture for its dense, strictly upright, and multi-stemmed habit. Because it is a male clone, it does not produce the fleshy red berries (arils) associated with many yews, making it a safer choice for gardens with children or pets where berry ingestion is a concern. It features the classic, dark green, needle-like evergreen foliage that makes yew such a timeless hedging choice. 'Hillii' is particularly well-suited for creating medium-sized, formal hedges and topiary, as it grows slightly slower and more compactly than the common English Yew. It is extremely hardy and remarkably shade-tolerant, making it ideal for difficult north-facing boundaries. While it prefers well-drained, fertile soil, it will tolerate a range of conditions, though it cannot stand waterlogged ground. It responds exceptionally well to clipping, which can be done in summer or autumn to maintain a razor-sharp profile.
