Golden Irish Yew 'Fastigiata Aureomarginata'
This stunning variation of the traditional Irish Yew is a classic choice for formal UK gardens. Taxus baccata 'Fastigiata Aureomarginata' forms a tight, upright column of vertical branches, making it an ideal choice for creating focal points, framing doorways, or adding vertical rhythm to a long border. The dark green needles are edged with a bright yellow margin, which gives the entire plant a golden glow when viewed from a distance. It is a slow-growing conifer, ensuring it remains manageable for many years. It is incredibly versatile and can be pruned or clipped to maintain a specific shape, although its natural columnar habit is very neat. Hardy to H7, it survives the British winter with ease and is famously tolerant of deep shade, though the golden colour is most vibrant in full sun. It thrives in most soils, including chalk, provided there is no waterlogging. All parts of the plant are highly toxic if ingested.
Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
Soil: Moist but well-drained loam or chalk.
Hardiness: H7 — below −20°C.
Flowering: Mar, Apr.
