Montezuma Cypress
The Montezuma Cypress is a majestic, partially deciduous to evergreen conifer, related to the Bald Cypress but typically less hardy for much of the UK, though established specimens thrive in milder areas. It develops a broad, often buttressed trunk and a wide, spreading crown, eventually reaching 20-35 metres in height and 10-15 metres in spread. Its soft, feathery, light green needles are retained longer than those of T. distichum or may remain evergreen in frost-free locations. It thrives in full sun and prefers consistently moist to wet, well-drained soils, tolerating both standing water and dry conditions once established. Hardy to H4/H5, it is a magnificent architectural tree for waterside planting or large, sheltered spaces in the south and west of the UK.
