Pond Cypress 'Nutans'
'Nutans' is an elegant and unusual deciduous conifer that is particularly well-suited to wet or boggy areas of the UK garden where many other trees would fail. It has a distinctive narrow, columnar habit with short, horizontal branches that bear delicate, bright green needles. These needles are held vertically, giving the tree a feathery, refined appearance. In autumn, the foliage turns a stunning rich copper or orange-brown before falling, providing a beautiful seasonal display. The bark is also a feature, being fibrous and attractive reddish-brown. Unlike the more common Bald Cypress, 'Nutans' is more compact and slower-growing, making it a viable option for medium-sized gardens. It is fully hardy and actually prefers to have its feet in wet soil, making it perfect for the edges of ponds or in poorly drained hollows. It can also adapt to normal garden soil as long as it does not dry out. It is a wonderful alternative to the more common weeping willows for water-side planting.
