Wood Betony 'Hummelo'
Stachys officinalis 'Hummelo' (sometimes listed as Stachys monieri) is an exceptional and robust perennial that has gained huge popularity in the UK for its neat habit and reliable performance. It forms a decorative mound of crisp, scalloped, dark green leaves. From mid to late summer, it produces numerous upright, leafless stems topped with dense, cylindrical spikes of vibrant rose-purple flowers. Unlike some of its relatives, 'Hummelo' does not have woolly foliage and is much more resistant to rot in damp weather. It reaches about 40-60cm in height and spread. It is fully hardy and thrives in any well-drained soil in full sun or light shade. It is a superb plant for the front or middle of a border, providing a mass of long-lasting colour that is highly attractive to bees and other pollinators. It is a low-maintenance choice that remains tidy throughout the growing season and requires little more than deadheading.
