Japanese Spiraea 'Magic Carpet'

Spiraea japonica 'Magic Carpet' is a small, deciduous shrub that is a powerhouse of colour for the front of a border. It is particularly valued for its changing foliage: in spring, the new leaves emerge a bright, glowing orange-red, which matures into a vibrant lime-gold as summer progresses. In autumn, the foliage takes on deeper copper and russet tones. During June and July, the plant is topped with flat clusters (corymbs) of small, deep pink flowers that contrast beautifully with the golden leaves. This cultivar is very hardy (H6) and exceptionally easy to grow, adapting to most garden soils that are not waterlogged. It has a low, spreading habit, typically reaching only 60cm in height. To maintain the best foliage colour and a neat shape, it is best to prune the whole plant back hard to about 10-15cm in early spring. It is a reliable, low-maintenance choice for adding multi-season interest.
