Spinach 'Medania'

'Medania' is one of the most reliable and popular varieties of true spinach for the UK gardener. It is a slow-bolting variety that produces thick, dark green, rounded leaves with an excellent, rich flavor. Unlike many older varieties that quickly run to seed at the first hint of warm weather, 'Medania' remains productive for a much longer period. It is versatile enough to be sown in spring for a summer crop or in late summer for an autumn and winter harvest. If given some protection with a cloche during the coldest months, it can provide fresh leaves throughout the winter. Spinach requires a moist, fertile soil and benefits from a spot that is slightly shaded during the hottest part of the day to further prevent bolting. The young 'baby' leaves are perfect for salads, while mature leaves are excellent steamed or added to curries. It is a nutrient-dense vegetable, exceptionally high in iron and vitamins.
