Spanish Broom

Spartium junceum is a vigorous, Mediterranean shrub that brings architectural drama and heady fragrance to the garden. It is characterised by its upright, rush-like green stems which remain largely leafless, giving the plant a unique, airy silhouette. In early to mid-summer, it produces an abundance of large, bright yellow, pea-like flowers that emit a powerful, honey-sweet scent, especially in the evening. Reaching heights of up to 3 metres, it is perfect for the back of a sunny border or as a stand-alone specimen on a dry bank. In the UK, it is highly valued for its ability to thrive in poor, sandy, or rocky soils where other plants might fail. It is extremely drought-tolerant and wind-resistant, making it suitable for coastal locations. While hardy, it can become leggy over time; pruning should be done carefully, as it does not always sprout readily from very old wood. Its late flowering period is excellent for extending the season of interest in a yellow-themed garden.
