Mountain Ash / Rowan 'Joseph Rock'
'Joseph Rock' is one of the most distinctive and beloved Rowan trees in UK cultivation. This small, upright deciduous tree is famed for its spectacular autumn display. The pinnate leaves turn brilliant shades of fiery orange, copper, and deep purple in late autumn. These vibrant colors provide a stunning backdrop for the clusters of berries, which turn from a creamy-white to a bright, translucent amber-yellow. Unlike red berries, these yellow fruits are often ignored by birds until late in the season, extending the period of interest. In spring, the tree produces flat heads of creamy-white flowers that are popular with pollinators. It has a neat, upright habit when young, becoming more rounded with age. It is very hardy (H6) and grows well in acidic to neutral soils. It is particularly effective in smaller gardens or as a street tree due to its compact nature and vertical interest. Avoid very alkaline or thin chalky soils for the best health.
