Whitebeam
Sorbus aria, the Whitebeam, is a handsome native deciduous tree, valued for its striking bi-coloured foliage and adaptability. It typically grows to 10-15 metres, forming a neat, domed crown. Its oval leaves are dark green and glossy on the upper surface, but covered in a distinctive silvery-white felt underneath, creating a beautiful shimmering effect in the wind. In late spring, clusters of white flowers appear, followed by bright red-orange berries in autumn, providing food for birds. Very hardy and tolerant of a wide range of conditions, including chalky soils and exposed sites, it's an excellent choice for street planting, smaller gardens, or as a feature tree.
