Tomato (Beefsteak) 'Super Marmande'
'Super Marmande' is a classic French beefsteak tomato that has become a favourite for UK growers looking for large, meaty fruits with a traditional, rich flavour. This is a semi-determinate variety, meaning it has a more bushy habit than standard cordons but still benefits from some support. It produces large, ribbed, slightly flattened fruits that are exceptionally juicy and perfect for slicing into sandwiches or using in traditional Mediterranean salads. While it can be grown outdoors in a very sunny, sheltered spot in the South of the UK, it is most reliable when grown in a greenhouse or polytunnel in cooler regions. 'Super Marmande' is particularly early to ripen for a large-fruited variety, which is a distinct advantage in the UK's shorter summers. It is noted for its resistance to Verticillium and Fusarium wilt. The fruits have a complex, slightly acidic flavour that epitomises the taste of home-grown tomatoes.
