Lance-Leaf Bamboo
A unique and seldom-seen bamboo that offers a completely different aesthetic from the typical tall, airy species. Shibataea lancifolia is a low-growing, bushy bamboo reaching only about 1 metre in height. Its most striking feature is its broad, lance-shaped leaves that grow in distinct ruffs, giving the plant a zig-zag appearance. It is a slow-spreading runner, forming dense, low thickets that are excellent for groundcover or low hedging. It is very hardy (H5) and thrives in the UK's damp, cool climate. It particularly enjoys acidic to neutral soils and performs best in partial shade, as full sun can bleach the leaves. It is an ideal plant for Japanese-style gardens, woodland edges, or for adding texture to the front of a shrub border. It requires very little maintenance other than an occasional thinning to keep the foliage looking fresh and to showcase its unusual stem structure.
Sun: Partial shade to full shade.
Soil: Acidic to neutral, moist soil.
Hardiness: H5 — down to −15°C.
