Snow Moor Grass f. nivalis
A charming, small-scale evergreen grass that is perfect for rock gardens, alpines, or the front of a border. It forms tight, low-growing hummocks of narrow, silver-green leaves. In late spring and early summer, it is topped with small, rounded, dark purple to near-black flower heads that eventually fade to a tawny brown. This species is exceptionally hardy (H7) and hails from mountainous regions, making it very well-suited to exposed or cold UK gardens. It prefers well-drained, alkaline to neutral soil and will not thrive in waterlogged conditions. It is an excellent choice for adding subtle texture and year-round structure without overwhelming nearby plants. It requires almost no maintenance other than a light trim of the faded flower stems in summer. Its compact habit and drought tolerance make it a useful plant for modern, minimalist gravel gardens or vertical green walls.
Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
Soil: Well-drained chalk or loam.
Hardiness: H7 — below −20°C.
Flowering: May, Jun.
