Blue-green Moor Grass

An invaluable evergreen grass for early season interest, Sesleria heufleriana is often overlooked but highly recommended by UK designers. It forms neat, rounded mounds of foliage that have a striking two-tone effect: the upper surface of the leaf is a bright, refreshing green, while the underside is a cool glaucous blue. As early as March, it sends up many slender stems topped with small, almost black, egg-shaped flower heads. As these mature, they erupt with creamy-white pollen-bearing anthers, creating a beautiful contrast against the dark base of the flower. It is incredibly tough, tolerant of both dry shade and full sun, and isn't fussy about soil pH. It is perfect for mass planting under deciduous trees or as an architectural groundcover in a modern garden. It stays tidy throughout the winter and only needs a quick trim in early spring to refresh the foliage. It is fully hardy and reliable year after year.
