Hen and Chicks 'Red Beauty'

A vibrant cultivar of Sempervivum, 'Red Beauty' forms neat rosettes of succulent leaves, intensifying in colour to a rich red in sunnier conditions. Each rosette, or 'hen', produces numerous offsets, or 'chicks', creating a mat-forming effect. Growing to about 10cm tall and spreading indefinitely, it's perfect for rockeries, dry stone walls, or containers in the UK. Extremely hardy, it thrives in full sun and very well-drained, poor soil. Small star-shaped flowers may appear in summer on mature rosettes before they die back, having produced their offspring. No significant wildlife value but excellent for low-maintenance ground cover.

Sun: Full sun.

Soil: Poor, very well-drained.

Hardiness: H7 — below −20°C.

Flowering: Jun, Jul.
