Pittoni's Houseleek

This is a rare and beautiful Sempervivum species native to Austria, valued for its soft, hairy rosettes. The leaves are a delicate grey-green, often with prominent dark purple or brownish tips, and are covered in fine glandular hairs that give them a velvety texture. Unlike many other species, Sempervivum pittonii produces lovely primrose-yellow flowers in the summer, which stand out against the more common pink or red blooms of the genus. It is a slow-growing species that forms small, tight clumps of rosettes. Rated H5, it is hardy enough for the UK if protected from excessive winter wetness, which can cause the hairy leaves to rot. It is best grown in a gritty alpine trough or a well-ventilated cold frame where its subtle beauty can be appreciated. It requires very little nutrients and needs a position in full sun to maintain its compact form.

Sun: Full sun.

Soil: Very gritty, well-drained soil.
