Mountain Houseleek

A true alpine specialist, Sempervivum montanum is native to the high mountains of Europe, including the Alps and Pyrenees. It forms small, neat rosettes of dark green leaves that are covered in fine, glandular hairs, giving the plant a slightly sticky feel and a matte appearance. The rosettes often have a reddish-purple tint at the base. In summer, it produces remarkably beautiful, starry flowers that are a deep crimson or reddish-purple, often with a darker centre. This species is extremely hardy (H7) and is perfectly adapted to the cold, wet winters of the UK, provided it is not sitting in stagnant water. It looks best when grown in naturalistic rock crevices, stone troughs, or as part of a miniature alpine garden. It spreads slowly via offsets to form dense, cushion-like mats. Its rugged charm and vivid flowers make it a standout choice for those looking to recreate an alpine landscape.
