Rolling Hen-and-chicks

This species is distinct within the Sempervivum group due to its unique method of propagation. Small, spherical offsets form on thin, brittle runners and easily detach, literally 'rolling' away from the parent plant to root elsewhere. The rosettes are small, tight, and typically bright light green, often with red-flushed tips in winter. In summer, it produces attractive pale yellow, bell-shaped flowers on short, hairy stems. Rated H7, it is exceptionally hardy and can withstand the coldest UK winters without issue. It is naturally found in rocky crevices and mountain slopes, making it a perfect candidate for dry stone walls, alpine troughs, or between paving stones. It requires very little soil and thrives in the harshest of conditions, provided it has full sun and excellent drainage. It is a charming, low-maintenance plant that adds a sense of history and permanence to a rock garden.
