Cobweb Houseleek 'Bryoides'
Sempervivum arachnoideum 'Bryoides' is a fascinating and highly ornamental succulent that is a must-have for any alpine enthusiast. This cultivar is known for forming incredibly tiny, tight rosettes of fleshy green leaves, which are densely covered in a complex network of white, hair-like filaments that resemble a spider's web. These rosettes clump together to form a miniature, moss-like mound that is extremely tactile and visually striking. In summer, mature rosettes may produce short, leafy stalks topped with starry, bright pink flowers, after which the flowering rosette dies, leaving space for the numerous 'chicks' to fill. This plant is exceptionally hardy and perfectly adapted to the UK's colder climates, but its primary enemy is winter wet. It must be grown in very gritty, fast-draining compost, making it an ideal candidate for containers, stone troughs, or crevice gardens. It requires very little soil and can even be tucked into small holes in tufa rock or wall joints.
Sun: Full sun.
Soil: Grit-rich, very well-drained soil.
Hardiness: H7 — below −20°C.
Flowering: Jun Shatter, Jul Shatter.
