Okubo Bamboo
Semiarundinaria okuboi is a sophisticated and very straight-growing bamboo that provides a neat, architectural look for UK gardens. It is a medium-sized bamboo, typically reaching 3 to 5 metres. It is prized for its very vertical habit and short branches, which start high up the culm, giving it a very 'clean' look at the base. The culms are a deep green and the leaves are relatively large and lush. It is a slow runner, meaning it is more easily managed than a Phyllostachys, though a barrier is still recommended for peace of mind. It is very hardy (H5) and handles the UK wind well, making it an excellent choice for a tall, narrow hedge or an urban privacy screen. It is also remarkably shade tolerant, though it will grow more densely in a sunny spot. In late summer or autumn, it may occasionally produce small flowers, but its primary appeal is its tidy, evergreen pillar-like form. It works particularly well in minimalist or contemporary garden designs.
Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil.
Hardiness: H5 — down to −15°C.
